what you should know about yeast infection

Yeast infection is a common medical condition. Statistics shows that almost 75% of women get it at least once in their life time. The normal vaginal environment is acidic in nature, this is due to the presence of lactobacilli a beneficial bacteria that lives there. The vaginal environment also contains a small amount of yeast, when there is an microflora imbalance yeast growth which are typical fungus called candida albicans increases and this leads to vaginal thrush. It is to be noted that the condition is not a sexually transmitted infection though regular sexual activity can increase chances of developing one.

Although it is uncommon men can get a yeast infection by having unprotected sex with a woman with candidal vaginitis. Their symptoms include small white spots, redness dry rash on the penis, accompanied by itching, irritation or burning.

CAUSES OF YEAST INFECTION

1.Using scented soaps around vagina

2.Wearing too tight clothes. This increase the temperature and influence growth of yeast

3.Poor eating habits including consuming a lot of sugary foods.

3.Hormonal imbalance during the menstrual cycle.

4.Increased use of antibiotics. Antibiotics acts against both the good and bad bacteria and thus reducing the immunity causing yeast overgrowth

5.Weak immune system example if an individual is affected with STIs and STDs such as HIV/AIDS

6.Uncontrolled diabetes

7.Lack of enough sleep and stress

SYMPTOMS : Sometimes its not easy to identify if the condition is a yeast infection, the following are some of its symptoms.

>Itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva

>Burning sensation when urinating or during sexual intercourse

>Redness and swelling of the vulva, vaginal pain and soreness

>Vaginal discharge, that is white and odor free. Once the discharge is greenish or milky accompanied by a fishy odor it could be due to development of candidiasis or other STIs.

TREATMENT AND PREVENTION. Vaginosis passes usually away after some few days, if the symptoms still persist after some days.

Use fermented milk also called yoghurt but which is not flavored , yoghurt balances the genital environment.

Avoid self prescription and the use of antibiotics without the advice of a doctor. This can cause resistance and become hard to treat the condition.

Consult a doctor to perform a smear test.

Eat a balanced diet adding fibers and proteins into your diet.

Wear loose clothes and cotton underpants.

Once you experience the symptoms dont panic rather find suitable a suitable medication including visiting your physician . Remember the condition is treatable. See a doctor as soon as you see symptoms.
